Matt Smith to play football for England on TV

Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith is just one of many celebrities who have signed up to play football for England.

For ITV's Soccer Aid 2014 - a charity match to be shown live from Manchester United's Old Trafford on Sunday, June 8 - Matt will be joining captain Robbie Williams, singers Olly Murs and Mark Owen, comedian John Bishop, Homeland's Damian Lewis, Ben Shephard, and True Blood's Stephen Moyer, as well as former pros Jamie Redknapp, David Seaman, Paul Ince and Teddy Sheringham as they take on a Rest Of The World pro-celebrity team.

Matt will be a useful addition to the team, as he once played in youth teams at Northampton Town, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City before a serous back injury put a stop to a possible professional career.

Welshman Michael Sheen again captains the Rest Of The World side and leads out Musketeers star Santiago Cabrera, Westlife's Nicky Byrne, chef Gordon Ramsay and fellow Hollywood actor James McAvoy among others.

The last Soccer Aid match in 2012 saw England win 3-1, after being a goal behind...

"Soccer Aid returns for the fifth time in June and I admit there are scores to settle," says Robbie Williams. "Leading the England team, I will be making sure we defend that trophy against Rest of the World. There's never been a better time for us to show our support for UNICEF so please dig deep and buy your tickets now!"

Nicholas Cannon
TV Content Director on TV Times, What's On TV and TV & Satellite Week

I'm a huge fan of television so I really have found the perfect job, as I've been writing about TV shows, films and interviewing major television, film and sports stars for over 25 years. I'm currently TV Content Director on What's On TV, TV Times, TV and Satellite Week magazines plus Whattowatch.com. I previously worked on Woman and Woman's Own in the 1990s. Outside of work I swim every morning, support Charlton Athletic football club and get nostalgic about TV shows Cagney & Lacey, I Claudius, Dallas and Tenko. I'm totally on top of everything good coming up too.
