Belle De Jour | Luis Bunuel's celebrated exploration of female desire turns 50

From Studiocanal comes the newly restored 4k version of director Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour starring Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel and Michel Piccoli.

Recently married to successful surgeon Pierre (Jean Sorel), Séverine (Catherine Deneuve) cannot reconcile her masochistic fantasies with her boring days and empty evenings. When her love-struck friend Henri (Michel Piccoli) mentions a secretive high-class brothel, Severine pays a visit and eventually begins to work there during the day under the name Belle de Jour. But when one of her clients grows possessive, she must try to go back to her normal life…

This sumptuously filmed picture was Buñuel’s most successful of his career and won the Best Picture award at the 1976 Venice Film Festival. The 50th Anniversary Edition will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital download on October 2 complete with brand new extras material (see below) and 6 exclusive art cards.

BONUS EXTRAS • Commentary by professor Peter W Evans • The Last Script • A Story of Perversion or Emancipation? • Interview with Dr Sylvain Mimoun • Trailer • Jean-Claude Carrière interview • Masterclass with Diego Buñuel and Jean-Claude Carrière

To accompany the re-issue and to celebrate work of the Spanish surrealist director loved by critics and cineastes alike, Bunuel: The Essential Collection, a boxset of 7 of the director’s most significant films, will be released on 23 October.
