The Cabin in the Woods, from fan favourites Joss Whedon (Buffy, Firefly, Dollhouse) and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield), gots its world premiere at SXSW in Texas last night, but we've been lucky to preview it as well, and it's a mind-bending game changer of a horror that certainly threw all our pre-conceived notions out the water - and then some. The cool Rubik's Cube inspired film poster gives you an idea of what puzzles lie ahead…
The film starts off like every other body count horror with two university couples and their stoner friend (Franz Kranz in his best role ever) going off to a remote cabin in the woods for a weekend getaway. But strange things start to happen as soon as they arrive, and you quickly find yourself screaming 'Don't go in the basement' at the youngsters, who are unaware of what's been planned for them...
I'm certainly not going to spoil what follows (shame some other reviews have already spilled the beans), but I can say that Whedon and Goddard have conjured up an insanely fun thrill ride that spins, folds and mutates the well-worn slasher/zombie/horror genres - with more than a few nods to Evil Dead and Hellraiser - mixing in their own brand of Buffy-style humour and Dollhouse sci-fi cleverness to deliver a seriously-warped Scooby Doo adventure for the comic book generation.
The Cabin in the Woods doesn't get its official release until 13 April, but here's the official Facebook http://youtube.com/v/HdUwP_Ei4G4
