Risk everything... for love.
Because she suffers from severe combined immunodeficiency (she’s allergic to everything), teenager Maddy (Amandla Stenberg) has spent her entire life inside her hermetically sealed LA house. But she secretly rebels against her strict widowed mother’s suffocating care after she falls for the dreamy boy next door (Nick Robinson). Will love put her life in jeopardy?
Based on Nicola Yoon’s young adult novel, Everything, Everything is another of those teen romances seeking to mine pathos and melodrama out of a character’s critical illness. Indeed, it even shares a shut-in heroine with the recently released Bella Thorne weepie Midnight Sun and a similar risk-everything-for-love storyline.
Just as importantly, it also boasts two agreeably attractive leads in Stenberg (Rue in The Hunger Games) and Nick Robinson (Jurassic World). As such, it will no doubt go down a treat with its intended audience. Yet despite a galumphing plot twist towards the end, director Stella Meghie’s movie is as antiseptic and bland as Maddy’s deluxe home.
