The Goob | Yearning to break free of the Fens

The Goob Liam Walpole

The Goob Liam Walpole

Trapped at home in rural Norfolk for the long, hot summer, a gawky 16-year-old school-leaver (newcomer Liam Walpole) yearns to break free in atmospheric coming-of-age drama The Goob. He is devoted to his mum (Sienna Guillory), who runs a roadside diner, but finds himself dangerously at odds with her vicious, bullying boyfriend (Sean Harris), a local stock-car racing champion. The arrival of the season's fruit-pickers brings things to a head. First-time writer-director Guy Myhill is stronger on mood than plot, but he makes suggestive use of the wide-open Fenland landscape and gets striking performances from his cast.

Certificate 18. Runtime 85 mins. Director Guy Myhill

The Goob debuts on Sky Cinema Premiere on Monday 20 February and is available on DVD from Soda Pictures.

Jason Best

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
