Veteran sports presenter Des Lynam has picked up his OBE, admitting to being 'strangely nervous'. The usually silver-tongued broadcaster, a well-known face on both the BBC and ITV, received the honour for services to sport. After collecting his award from the Queen at Buckingham Palace, Irish-born Des said: "You want to do what you are told absolutely right." He described the Queen as 'charming' and added: "She was asking me whether I was broadcasting very much. I said, 'sparingly these days'." The master of the one-liner presented BBC Grandstand as well as Match Of The Day. He said he had been 'absolutely surprised and thrilled' to receive the accolade. Des said he had 'no idea' when he would wear his award, but added: "I think there are certain occasions when you show your medals." He described himself as being very lucky to have had a wide variety of jobs, ranging from sports presenting to hosting Countdown for a year and guest presenting on Have I Got New For You. The 65-year-old presenter is well-known for his off-the-cuff quips, such as 'Shouldn't you be at work?' before England's 1998 World Cup opener against Tunisia, which was played during the day. At one wet Wimbledon, he remarked: "This is live rain we are watching, not recorded rain."
