Comedian and actor Alexander Armstrong has reportedly been confirmed as the new host of Channel 4’s Countdown. According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Alexander was given his contract to sign over the weekend, but has informally accepted the position. Alexander, who recently starred in the BBC One comedy-drama Mutual Friends and is one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller, is said to be a big fan of the show. A source close to the actor said: "Alexander was delighted to be offered the job and can’t wait to get started.” "He is a big fan of the show and wants to make his mark on it. The hope is he will bring in a whole new audience to the much-loved show." The news ends months of speculation about who will take over from Des O’Connor – but producers are still said to be searching for a maths wiz to replace Carol Vorderman, who quit after a row about pay this summer.
