TV Times top picks for today

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Monday 28th May

Peter Kay’s Car Share, 10pm, BBC1

This is, we are told, the last ever episode and it seems they really mean it this time. As with the Unscripted episode, no previews were available, but we do know it’s set the morning after the last series ended when Kayleigh told John: ‘I love you, and it’s killing me that you don’t feel the same’ and stepped out of his car. Here’s hoping it ends happily ever after. Rating: ****

King Lear, 9.30pm, BBC2

King Lear

Richard Eyre previously directed Anthony Hopkins in the BBC’s excellent 2015 adaptation of stage play The Dresser, about an ageing Shakespearean actor appearing in a production of King Lear. Now the two have reunited for this compelling version of the Shakespeare tragedy with a modern setting, in which Hopkins gives a powerhouse performance in the title role. Stellar support comes from the likes of Emma Thompson – who previously appeared with Hopkins in The Remains of the Day and Howards End – as Lear’s daughter Goneril, plus Tobias Menzies, Florence Pugh, Christopher Eccleston, Emily Watson, Andrew Scott and Jim Broadbent. Rating: ****

Jamie’s Quick & Easy Food, 8pm, C4

Using just five ingredients, Jamie rustles up another four crowd-pleasing dishes to help even the busiest kitchen-dodger create a scrumptious meal without a shopping list longer than their arm. The first is a super-quick sharing dish of sticky chicken wings, followed by a sizzling sirloin, served with something a bit different – ‘awesome aubergines’ as Jamie calls them. Next is a great pasta dish – a creamy garlic mushroom affair – that is sure to become a favourite when time isn’t on your side and the fridge is looking empty. The final dish of the day is a grown-up rum ’n’ raisin ice cream, which will surely impress without too much stress. Rating: ****

More previews tomorrow.
