Blind Date shocks fans after rude contestant said date was "no Melanie Sykes"

Fans of Blind Date were outraged last night after one contestant gave a tactless review of his date. Gary and Deborah returned to the show after being matched last week, but Gary was more interested in Melanie Sykes, who provides voiceovers for the show.

Blind Date bowed out on an episode that shocked viewers when a contestant gave a rude review of his date.

Gary and Deborah returned to the Channel 5 dating show to tell host Paul O’Grady about how they had got on after being matched on last week’s programme.

But viewers were stunned by Gary’s tactless observation that his date was “no Melanie Sykes”, making reference to the star who provides the Blind Date voiceovers.

Melanie Sykes: Gino D'Acampo is hilarious

Gary said his date was "no Melanie Sykes"

Channel 5 tweeted during the programme: Sorry, Gary. You can't choose our @MsMelanieSykes! #BlindDate 💓 pic.twitter.com/XgajW8jP22

Fans of the show feared it might not have been a match made in heaven when they saw how far apart the pair were sitting.

@mcfcnorthstand3 tweeted: Gary and Deborah, got on hopefully. But that gap in sofa 😕#blinddate

Viewers were not impressed by Gary’s rudeness, especially when a visibly-upset Deborah claimed they had kissed.

Fans of the show were devastated that the series has come to an end, but there was good news when it was announced that a new series of Blind Date will launch next year.

The show returned earlier this year after 14 years off air.

Originally hosted by the late Cilla Black, the show was incredibly popular during the 80s and 90s.

As the revamped version of the show returned, Paul O'Grady paid tribute to good friend Cilla.

He said: “It’s been 14 years since Blind Date has been on our screens and it was presented of course by the late, great and my friend, Miss Cilla Black.

“Let’s hear it for her. The woman who gave me two heart attacks and broke my nose in a Jacuzzi. Oh god, I don’t half miss her, I tell you.”
