Couch Potato Pickings - Boys Don’t Cry

Boy’s Don’t Cry: Hilary Swank

On Sky Drama tonight at 10pm

In my King Kong post on Saturday, I indicated that there would be some more monster movies this week and, in my opinion, the attitudes of the brutal bullies in this film are much more monstrous than any of the scary beasts that pop up in the many creature features out there.

Boys Don't Cry is the story of a girl called Teena Brandon who grows up fancying girls, wearing boys clothes and acting like a boy.

Boys Don’t Cry: Hilary Swank

Identifying totally as a heterosexual male, Teena Brandon changes her name to Brandon Teena and is perceived by all those around her as a young man. Unlike the transsexual characters I recently celebrated in the movies Transamerica and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, this character doesn't take medication or surgery to change her sex so, while identifying totally as male, anatomically she is female.

When Brandon starts dating a girl, problems arise. I'm not going to reveal any more. Take a look at this trailer and you'll get an idea of what happens to this character as well as an impression of how monstrous some people can be.

The film is based on a true story, which makes it even more harrowing. Hilary Swank won one of her two Oscars for this movie, and deservedly so.

I had some disturbed dreams when I last watched this film, so be warned. If you think it's not for you and you'd rather have more straightforward nightmares tonight, then you'll be pleased to know that Sci-fi is showing prehistoric monsters at 8pm in The Lost World: Jurassic Park followed by deadly insects at 10.30pm in Deadly Invasion: The Killer Bee Nightmare. Sweet dreams...
