On Film4 tonight at 11.35pm
http://youtube.com/v/j5EmCKbWS6c If I told you that Withnail in this cult film drinks about 40 units, would you have any idea how much alcohol that is?
I do wish they would stop talking in units when it comes to warning the general public about drinking too much. The following paragraph comes from the Drink Aware website:
The alcohol content of drinks is measured in units. One UK unit contains eight grams of pure alcohol. The UK Government advises that men should not regularly drink more than three to four units a day and women not more than two to three. Consistently drinking four or more units for men, and three or more for women, isn't advisable because of the progressive health risks it carries.
I've no idea how much eight grams of pure alcohol is, do you? However, if a man should be drinking no more than three to four units a day, then that gives you an idea of how excessive Withnail's 40 units is. So, if you were thinking about playing the infamous Withnail and I drinking game tonight then now's the time to wake up to how stupid and dangerous and unfunny that would be.
