Craig Charles confirms new series of Red Dwarf

Coronation Street's Craig Charles has confirmed that the cult sci-fi show Red Dwarf will be returning for a brand new series next year. The futuristic comedy originally ran for eight series over an 11-year period before it was axed in 1999. It was then picked up by Freeview channel Dave which commissioned three new episodes, each gaining record viewings for the channel. Craig, who plays human Dave Lister, broke the news on Real Radio's breakfast show earlier this week. Craig told presenters the success of the specials led to the creation of the new series: "It did really well which was really quite weird because we all thought we were just doing it for a laugh. "It got more viewers than BBC2 and Channel 4 combined on the night which is really good! "So they've just commissioned another series of Red Dwarf. We're gonna film at the end of November, December and January". When asked if he thinks the show still has a place on TV, he said: "Well, yes, only if it's still as funny as it used to be". The new series will comprise six half-hour episodes and will feature the much loved characters including Lister, the Cat and Rimmer.
