Fans were left convinced the BBC hit was left open for a third series following its dramatic season 2 ending...

Doctor Foster star Suranne Jones has finally answered rumours that the show could be returning for a third season - but it's not good news for fans.

The actress - who played scorned wife Gemma Foster - revealed that there are currently 'no plans' to bring the hit show back, despite fans being desperate to know what has happened to Gemma and Simon's son, Tom, after he ran away at the end of series two in a shocking cliffhanger.

Talking on The Graham Norton Show, she said: 'There are no plans because everyone is busy and I am working all of next year so I just don't know.'

Speaking of the show's success, she added: 'I've never done a show before where people got so behind it. You couldn't binge watch it so I think it had that 'water cooler' effect and people loved it.'

And she admitted that fans are shocked when they meet her in real life.

'People are quite disappointed that I am quite nice when they meet me and not mad like my character,' she said.

Next year Suranne is starring in West End thriller Frozen, which will be followed by Sally Wainwright’s new TV drama Gentleman Jack.

However, there may be light at the end of the tunnel for viewers considering there was a two year gap between the first and second series, with Suranne previously admitting that show writer Mike Bartlett has already plotted an outline for her character’s next chapter.

Speaking before the season 2 finale, she said: 'If people are still interested in 2019 in that third story, then maybe.'
