FIRST LOOK: Watch Jude Law in controversial new series The Young Pope

The first trailer for Jude Law’s new TV series, starring him as the first US pope, has been released and he looks set to shake up the Catholic Church.

Jude plays fictional Pope Pius XIII, born Lenny Belardo, in The Young Pope, which already promises nudity and high drama among the hushed halls of the Vatican.

Forget white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney – the Pope’s penchant for cigarettes seems the least worrying vice in what Italian director Paolo Sorrentino called a show about faith and how people 'handle and manipulate power'.

“Who are you, Lenny?” he’s asked in the trailer.

“I am a contradiction. I’m God: one in three and three in one. Like Mary Virgin the Mother, like man good and evil,” he replies.

“What do you intend to do?” he’s questioned.

“Revolution.”

The teaser shows Lenny everywhere from leading a conclave to on his knees with a SWAT team behind him.

An international cast joins the two-time Academy Award nominee, including award-winning actress Diane Keaton as nun Sister Mary, Bridge of Spies star Scott Shepherd as Cardinal Dussolier, Swimming Pool’s Ludivine Sagnier as Esther and The Green Mile’s James Cromwell as Cardinal Michael Spencer.

It will tell the 'controversial story of the beginning of Pius XIII’s Pontificate', with a 'complex and conflicted' Lenny set to face turbulent times that will test his faith and more.

The eight-part show is a co-production by Sky, HBO and Canal+. It will screen on Sky Atlantic from October.
