Going For Gold returns to Five
Five is to revamp the classic daytime game show Going For Gold, it has been announced. Former Five newsreader John Suchet will replace original host Henry Kelly, who presented the show on BBC1 throughout the 1990s. The show's defining concept was that it featured contestants from across Europe. The revival will feature British contestants, who will compete in the same rounds as those in the original show: beat-the-buzzer, four-in-a-row, and head-to-head. The daily winner of the cash prize will then get the chance to return on the next edition to defend their title. As well as the daily 12.45pm show, there will be Going For Gold Extra, a 10-minute programme later in the afternoon, pitting the winner of the daily show with a viewer at home. Going For Gold, with its recognisable theme tune, became a cult hit and ran for nearly a decade after it was first broadcast on the BBC in the late 1980s, usually after the BBC's lunchtime broadcast of Neighbours. John said: "I'm delighted to be presenting Going For Gold on Five. After years of reading the news this will be the first time I've hosted a quiz show so it's a brand new challenge and I'm really excited to try something new." Ben Gale, Five's director of programmes, added: "We're delighted to be bringing back Going For Gold to Five this autumn. "It's a much-loved and fondly remembered quiz show and to have someone of John's experience to front the series will only add to its already iconic status." Going For Gold will air daily at 12.45pm on Five from October 13.
