Take a look at the behaviour of Napoleon in this clip:

We've all met a character like this at some point in our lives. I bet you have, whether it be that person who once insulted you at a party, the individual who showed you no consideration in the supermarket, the uncooperative work colleague who has you biting your tongue, the friend you can't see too much of, or the relative you dread to see at family gatherings.
Many people have described Napoleon Dynamite as a transatlantic Adrian Mole. I don't agree. I think Napoleon and Adrian are very, very different.
Napoleon (Jon Heder) is oblivious to his social ineptitude, doesn't appear to acknowledge the feelings and needs of others and is not in touch with his emotions. Adrian, on the other hand, recognises his awkwardness, is hyper-sensitive to those around him, is very in touch with his emotions and is wonderfully self-deprecating.

I empathise with Adrian Mole and think he's great. I'd love to feel the same sort of empathy for Napoleon, but no matter how hard I try, he continues to annoy and frustrate me. He makes me wish I actually had some dynamite to shake him up and wake him up to the way he's affecting the world around him.
However, it has to be said that it's because this dweeb, nerd, geek, or whatever you choose to call him, is such a complex character, this film is ultimately so remarkably entertaining.
