Former coach Ricky Wilson warned that being on The Voice doesn't guarantee you're going to be a pop star for the rest of your life

Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson has warned winners of TV music competitions that their achievement does not guarantee pop stardom.

The former coach on The Voice UK urged hopeful musicians to audition for the show and its competitors, but advised they would still have to 'fight' for success.

Appearing on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Ricky said: “It’s a gambling game being in the music industry, so if you can get into it anyway you can, get into it and if it takes a TV show to do it, then do it.”

“But it doesn’t necessarily mean if you win something you’re going to be a pop star for the rest of your life. Don’t ever think that, you’re just on a TV show, it’s like I’m on here today.

“You have to be a fighter and you can fight your way to winning The Voice, but it doesn’t guarantee anything.

“The lows teach you more about yourself than the highs will ever do because when you’re on enjoying it you’re drinking champagne and holding Brit Awards in the air. But the lows really make you write better songs and be a better person.”

Ricky left the programme after its move from the BBC to ITV, but he revealed he is open to a return, days after 21-year-old Mo Adeniran was crowned winner of the latest series.

Asked if he would make a comeback, he replied: “Of course I would. I done it for three years and I did really enjoy it, it was the best time I’d ever had, and I’d won it twice in a row.

“But I thought if I did it again… The only reason would be money and that’s not a good reason to do it.”
