BBC One's Sunday night action drama The Musketeers is set to return for a second series after becoming a ratings hit.

The show - which has gone head to head with ITV's Mr Selfridge in the battle for viewers - kicked off its run with over 9m viewers, and since then has held steady around the 6.3m mark.

"Drama in 2014 has got off to a great start on BBC One and The Musketeers has really brought something fresh and new to the channel," said BBC One controller Charlotte Moore.

"I can't wait to see how things will develop in the next series."

The show, which delivers a fresh spin on Alexandre Dumas' classic tale, stars Luke Pasqualino, Santiago Cabrera, Tom Burke and Howard Charles as the Musketeers, while Peter Capaldi plays the evil Cardinal Richelieu.

However there is no word on whether Capaldi - who is currently filming his first series as Doctor Who - will return for a second run of episodes.
