TV Times top picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Friday 25th May

The Cliff Richard Story, 9pm, Channel 5

Born Harry Webb in 1940, Britain’s answer to Elvis Presley has been famous ever since being persuaded to change his name to Cliff (as in rock, geddit?) Richard (a nod to Little Richard) in 1958. This overview looks at his life and career from before the breakthrough of debut single Move It, with friends, colleagues and journalists all pitching in with observations on this much profiled and yet still fairly mysterious survivor. Rating: ***

Friday Night Dinner, 10pm, C4

Dining chez Goodman is rarely pleasant for visitors, and tonight is no exception as Jonny (Tom Rosenthal) brings his recently dumped friend Ben round for dinner. The trouble starts when Martin (Paul Ritter) unearths his old ventriloquist’s dummy ‘Lord Luck’ and treats everyone to a performance, complete with a rather unfortunate catchphrase. Another excellent episode of this consistently funny series. Rating: ***

The Bridge, 9pm, BBC2

The first couple of episodes in any series of The Bridge can be fairly bewildering – all those people, all those unrelated plotlines. But things are starting to pull together nicely in tonight’s third episode as we find out how the pickpocket sisters, the creepy commune, the odd twin brothers and the dead woman’s husband and his shady assistant Susanne all fit into the case of the murdered immigration official. The case is really starting to grip, but there are humorous moments, too, like watching the neat, orderly and intensely systematic Saga (the insanely watchable Sofia Helin) trying to get her head around the concept of hot-desking. Rating: ****

More previews tomorrow.
