TV Times top picks for today

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Monday 16th April

The Queen’s Green Planet, 9pm / ITV

What happened when Sir David Attenborough and Queen Elizabeth took a stroll round the gardens of Buckingham Palace last Summer? All is revealed in this one-off documentary made to celebrate a new initiative called The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy, which is committed to preserving natural habitats across the 52 nations of the Commonwealth for future generations. It’s certainly a worthy venture, but what’s more interesting is eavesdropping on what these two venerable figures – who were born within a month of each other in 1926 – chat about as they take a turn around the Palace grounds. Rating: ****

Nightmare Pets SOS, 7.30pm (not Scotland & Wales), BBC1

As a nation we’re pretty potty about animals, but unruly pets actually cost £4bn in damage to our homes each year and bad behaviour is the number one reason for rehoming animals. To help desperate owners with their nightmare pets, a crisis centre staffed by vets and behavioural experts has been specially set up for this new series – and first through the doors are Jo and Tony, whose parrot Archie is so aggressive that Jo has ended up in A&E with severe wounds from his vicious beak. The team are also on hand to help Pupagano, a dog with a phobia of the outdoors, and give advice to new mum Hannah, whose cat Rupert has a habit of peeing everywhere, including on her baby’s toys! Rating: ****

Give It a Year, 8pm (times vary, not Scotland), ITV

Dragons’ Den meets This Time Next Year in this new series, which follows The Apprentice’s Karren Brady visiting newbie entrepreneurs as they launch businesses. After giving them life-changing advice, Karren then strides off, returning a year later to find out if the dream is still alive. Tonight’s hopefuls are the timid but talented Sarah, who wants to expand her illuminated letters company, and Thomas, the know-it-all mug manufacturer funding his business through poker winnings… Karren certainly doesn’t mince her words when Thomas tries to defend his overpriced product! Rating: ****

More previews tomorrow.
