Elephants on the Move, 7.30pm (times vary), BBC1
As tasks go, transporting four Asian elephants 140 miles up one of Britain’s biggest motorways is a pretty mammoth one. Elephants have been known to die in transit, and sedating them carries some risks. In this film, previously shown on BBC West Midlands, we follow the brave keepers of Leicestershire’s Twycross Zoo, who have worked for months to prepare their all-female herd for the journey to their new home at Blackpool Zoo – all part of an important breeding programme aimed at reversing the decline of Asian elephants. Cameras follow the elephants in the run-up to the move, but when the big day dawns, not all of them are happy to cooperate… Rating: ***
Nadiya’s Family Favourites, 8pm, BBC2
Family get-togethers can be fraught affairs, but Nadiya has recipes to tempt the fussiest eater, including fries seasoned with furikake (a savoury Japanese taste bomb) plus bacon jam, jollof pilau with a refreshing salted cucumber salad, and a back-to-front cheesecake that looks good enough to bury your face in. Tasty food that’s easy to make –we’d call that a win-win. Rating: ****
Our Guy in Russia, 9pm, C4
Guy Martin continues his journey across Russia, starting in Archangelsk, home to Europe’s only diamond mine. He has a go at driving one of the world’s biggest dumper trucks and watches how diamonds are mined – all under intense security! He then visits the Kalashnikov factory to see how the world’s most popular gun, the AK47, is put together, and ends his journey visiting the Buryat tribe and drinking a lot of fermented milk vodka! Rating: ***
