Anita and Me… and Me, 9.50pm, BBC2
Meera Syal travels back to the small village of Essington in the Black Country to introduce her 2002 film Anita and Me, as part of the BBC’s Big Asian Summer season. Visiting the site of her old family home, she recounts the characters and experiences that inspired the book on which the film was based and reflects on how things have changed for young British Asians since then. ‘All these years on, there are many more positive representations of who we are and of our culture,’ Meera says. ‘Whether it’s girls wearing Bindis going clubbing or curry being the nation’s favourite food, we’re here and we contributed.’ (Anita and Me follows, at 9.55pm). The PDSA staff have their hands full this week. Very full in the case of Bailey, a big mass of hurt who’s come out worse in a dog attack and has been brought in by worried owner Brenda. In Huyton, there’s a ‘rather you than me’ situation as a vet deals with a Staffordshire bull terrier who needs a lump removing from her nipple. At the other end of the scale, Frankie the chihuahua has lost his appetite, an orphan baby squirrel gets a new mum and what’s causing a Yorkshire terrier’s bad breath? Rating: ***
BBC Proms, 7.30pm, BBC4
A night of shows dedicated to the work of composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, on what would have been his 100th birthday, begins at London’s Royal Albert Hall with John Wilson conducting On the Town – Bernstein’s musical following three sailors on shore leave in New York City in 1944. West Side Stories – The Making of a Classic follows at 9.50pm, with Leonard Bernstein at the BBC at 10.50pm. Rating: ****
