Red Ape: Saving the Orangutan, 9pm, BBC2

Police storm a hideout where wildlife traffickers are keeping young orangutans to be illegally sold as pets… A baby clings to its mother in a tree that’s being felled to clear forest for the production of palm oil, while extraction teams wait to catch her fall so the pair can be relocated to protected rainforest. These are just two of the heart-rending scenes covered in this documentary that follows the conservation work being carried out by a pioneering orangutan rescue centre in Borneo. Can these intelligent animals, which feel emotions such as joy and loss and share 97 per cent of our human DNA, be saved from extinction? Rating: ****

Safe, Netflix

As Dexter’s vigilante serial killer, Michael C Hall was captivating and that’s certainly the case again in this complex but thoroughly entertaining thriller from crime writer Harlan Coben. Michael is troubled widower Tom (with an impressive British accent) whose teenage daughter goes missing. So begins a desperate search that takes Tom to some extremely dark places, while his secret girlfriend, cop Sophie (Amanda Abbington), tries to find out what’s happened using the official channels. It’s soon apparent that everyone, including Tom and Sophie, has a fair few skeletons in their closets, and will do anything to keep them hidden… Rating: *****

For the Love of Dogs, 8.30pm, ITV

Paul O’Grady’s love of dogs gets him in trouble this week, when he is ‘kissed’ by a puppy being treated for a rat bite. Hallucinating and delirious, Paul is hospitalised for a number of days, but is soon eager to get back on the streets. There he meets 21-year-old Anoushka, who feeds 50 local dogs a day. Back at the Friendicoes shelter, Paul meets Sandy, who hasn’t been rehomed yet because she’s scared of strangers. Will this be her lucky day? Rating: ****
