TV Times top picks for tonight
What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Tuesday 4th September
Wanderlust, 9pm, BBC1
Hollywood star Toni Collette makes her British TV debut in this funny and raunchy six-part drama about a married couple trying to put the spark back in their relationship. The Australian-born star, whose big-screen hits include The Sixth Sense and Muriel’s Wedding, plays Joy, a therapist who begins to reassess her marriage to teacher Alan (Stephen Mackintosh) after suffering a terrible bicycle accident. The pair love each other, but their sex life is non-existent and Joy won’t put up with it any more. Warm and honest, this is a refreshingly down-to-earth relationship drama with a top support cast that includes William Ash and Zawe Ashton. Rating: *****
The Great British Bake Off, 8pm, C4
‘Nobody in their right mind would deal with chocolate on a day like today,’ admits Prue at the height of this Summer’s heatwave. ‘But this is Bake Off and they’re going to have to!’ Yes, it’s Cake Week and tonight’s showstopper is a ‘tiered chocolate collar cake’, meaning the bakers will have to manipulate molten chocolate, temper it and encourage it to set in a roasting hot tent. Let’s just say it all gets rather messy… Also, Prue sets a bizarre but fun technical challenge, Noel raids the dressing-up box and the bakers take on a classic signature challenge: tray bakes. A delicious treat of an episode; how sweet it is to have GBBO back on our screens. Rating: *****
First Dates Hotel, 9.15pm, C4
Checking in to the hotel tonight is pastry chef Paul, 28, who makes a crust from selling pies, but hasn’t had much success on the romance front. How will he get on with doggy-daycare assistant Kimmy, 30? Also hoping Cupid will strike is breast cancer survivor Lauren, 32. After getting the all-clear in May, she’s determined to find love. Will it appear in the form of Paddy, 34, who she already knows via friends of friends? Rating: ****
More previews tomorrow.
