Best TV shows on TV tonight

Who Do You Think You Are, 9 pm, BBC One

Theatre legend Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber is determined to find out whether musical talent has always run through his family. The composer’s hopes of unearthing showbiz ancestors initially appear thwarted, but, on his mother’s side, he does trace a hero from the Battle of Waterloo and a formidable Tudor duchess. Meanwhile, on his paternal line, he learns about a caring Victorian missionary.

But he strikes gold when he gleefully hears about his colourful 18th-century forebears who were musical performers in the Netherlands. Andrew proves a charming subject to open this new series and we even meet his gorgeous dog Mojito!

Great British Dog Walks, 9 pm, More4

A sort of TV version of the long-running BBC Radio 4 series Ramblings – with added dogs – each episode sees Phil Spencer going on walks along Alfred Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Path with his German Shorthaired Pointer Luna, plus a special guest. Today, Phil and Luna are joined by double Paralympic gold-medal winner Libby Clegg and her guide dogs Hatti and Bramble. On their walk through the Yorkshire Dales, the former world champion tells Phil about her life and the role her dogs have played in it.

Taskmaster, 9 pm, Channel 4

It’s the final episode of series 15 as Jenny Eclair, Frankie Boyle, Mae Martin, Kiell Smith-Bynoe and Ivo Graham compete one last time in an effort to win a golden bust of Greg Davies. Meanwhile, two former contestants, Rose Matafeo and Mike Wozniak, have been named as hosts of a new spin-off, Junior Taskmaster, which will air on C4.

Alexander Armstrong in Sri Lanka, 9 pm, Channel 5

‘I was asked at the beginning of this trip how I felt about snakes,’ says Alexander, ‘and I said I felt fine.’ Cut to the presenter gingerly (and possibly ruefully) holding a box containing cobras as he helps a ‘snakes guardian’ release them into the wild.

Then, Alexander heads north to Jaffna to see how landmines – around 1.6 million were laid during the civil war – are being systematically cleared. He’s way off the tourist track in the final leg of his trip, but, as he says, it’s also important to get a feel for ancient and recent history as well as a sense of where the country is heading.
