TV Times tops picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Thursday 11th January

Death in Paradise, 9.00pm, BBC1

Tonight’s episode is a warning to January dieters everywhere, as it looks like the murder victim was poisoned with a green kale smoothie – we knew there was a reason those things tasted a bit funny! There’s a big-money poker tournament on Saint Marie and someone round the table must be responsible for bumping off one of the players. Unfortunately, for everyone except the killer, Florence is on reluctant bed rest after injuring her leg, leaving an enthusiastic Dwayne to appoint himself as Jack’s assistant detective. We can’t wait to see what the Commissioner makes of that news! Another welcome splash of Caribbean sunshine for the cold winter nights, guest-starring Mark Benton and Nigel Planer. Rating: ****

Walks with My Dog, 9.00pm, More4

Walks with My Dog

Dogs bring out the best in people so the only surprise about this simple but heartwarming series is why it wasn’t dreamt up before. To get series two up and running, Caroline Quentin takes a bracing walk along the Helford estuary. Meanwhile, Dom Joly is on Hadrian’s Wall with his two black labradors, and former Wales and Lions rugby captain Gareth Thomas is in the Brecon Beacons for a steep climb or two with his German pointer, Boyo. Rating: ****

Big Cats, 8.00pm, BBC1 (ex Wales)

This ambitious new three-part series uses the latest technology and filming techniques to bring us up close to the cat family. Episode one follows a pride of lions in Tanzania and a snow leopard looking for a mate in the Himalayas. We also witness a hungry puma looking for lunch in the South American region of Patagonia… but you may need to look away when a penguin is on the menu. Plus, there’s some brilliant slow-motion footage of a cheetah running at full speed. Don’t be fooled by the title, either – we also catch a glimpse of the world’s smallest feline, the rusty-spotted cat, which is so tiny it can fit in the palm of your hand. Fascinating. Rating: ****
