What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Wednesday 3rd October

The Apprentice, 9pm, BBC1

“I’m after workers not shirkers and winners not whingers,” declares a typically bullish Lord Sugar, as he faces the 16 brave souls hoping to become his latest business partner. And it’s a corker of a first task, which combines two of our favourite challenges – going abroad and tracking down fiendishly difficult items. But as the candidates head to Malta to bargain their socks off for nine things connected to its history, there are some naughty traps waiting for them to fall into… Throw in some monumental bickering, delusional bragging and impressively sneaky railroading and the stage is set for a classic series opener. Welcome back! Rating: *****

Upstart Crow, 8.30pm, BBC2

The Blackadder-esque comedy comes to an end this week, and with jokes involving the characters Bottom and Puck this third series, you couldn’t go wrong. This last episode sees Will (David Mitchell) facing a dilemma when his son Hamnet's confirmation clashes with the inaugural London Theatre Awards. And with Will being the greatest writer of all time, he must be a shoo-in for a gong? Rating: ****

Champions League, 8pm, BT Sport 2/BT Sport 3

After their last-minute loss in Italy to Inter in the first Champions League group, Tottenham will look to bounce straight back. Unfortunately, they’re against Barcelona (k-o 8pm). It was always going to be a struggle to do well in their group, but Spurs did draw 2-2 with the Spanish giants in a pre-season friendly before losing in a penalty shoot-out. Can they make Wembley count against Barca? Other Champions League matches include Liverpool’s trip to Napoli (k-o 8pm). Rating: *****

More previews tomorrow.
