Pointless Just like The Chase, Pointless will soon celebrate its 1000th episode. Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman have formed a wonderful team and the show has now broadened out to numerous specials, including one for the Olympics this year. It’s such a huge hit no one would bet against it reaching 2000 episodes.

COUNTDOWN Rachel Riley

Countdown The letters and numbers game has been on air since 1982 and still retains a massive following on Channel 4. Nick Hewer is the man in the presenting chair, with Rachel Riley doing the sums while Susie Dent tells us the meaning of all those long words in dictionary corner.

university challenge

University Challenge The first episode of this British institution went out in 1962. Many things have changed since then, not least that instead of Bamber Gascoigne’s gentle presenting style we now have the combative Jeremy Paxman in the hot seat, who looks disgusted when the students can’t get a ‘simple’ question correct.

tipping point

Tipping Point Ben Shephard fronts this popular ITV show which sees contestants answering general knowledge questions in order to gain counters which they use in a giant coin-pusher style game. There’s plenty of trick decisions for the contestants as they aim to walk away with the £10,000 jackpot.

THE CHASE

The Chase The Brits love a quiz show and there aren’t many as popular as The Chase. This year it clocks up its 1000th episode and the Bradley Walsh-hosted ITV show has lost none of its appeal. We continue to cheer on the contestants as they play the dreaded chasers who stand in their way.

Fifteen to One It seems a crime that they ever stopped running this brilliant Channel 4 quiz show. Now, it’s back, with Sandi Toksvig hosting, it’s proved just as popular as the days when the formidable William G Stewart used to front it. One of the purest quiz shows about and possibly the best.
