The Boss | Tough cookies! Melissa McCarthy's disgraced tycoon turns to brownies to rebuild her business empire

Melissa McCarthy originally created the character of a grandstanding, ruthlessly selfish businesswoman for the Los Angeles comedy troupe The Groundlings, but what worked in sketch form falls disappointingly flat when stretched to feature length in The Boss.

The plot finds McCarthy’s cutthroat capitalist Michelle Darnell trying to rebuild her business empire after getting sent to prison for insider trading. Released from jail, she foists herself on her former personal assistant, Kristen Bell’s single mom Claire, and seizes the opportunity of using Claire’s homemade brownies as the basis for a new business.

Her great wheeze is to recruit Girl Scouts (Claire’s daughter is one) to flog the brownies, which leads to a titanic, comically over-the-top street scrap when ‘Darnell’s Darlings’ encounter a rival troop. For the most part, though, the comedy here is depressingly crass and unnecessarily foul-mouthed.

Jason Best

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
