Jodie Comer is back as cold-blooded killer Villanelle with Sandra Oh’s hapless MI6 agent Eve Polastri in the award-winning cat-and-mouse thriller, which returns tonight for its long-awaited second series.

In the first episode, the drama begins 30 seconds on from series one’s shock finale, which saw Eve tracking Villanelle down to her Paris apartment and stabbing her – only for Villanelle to disappear!

Sandra Oh told TV Times: "The penetration of Eve stabbing Villanelle was very intimate. I loved playing on that symbolic level and also playing the reality of what happened and the consequences.

"Eve has really tried to ground herself in the normalcy of her past life and you’ll see her not being able to.

"Eve’s a lot darker this series."

Villanelle's changed a bit too, as Jodie Comer told us: "Yes, this is a Villanelle we’ve never seen before. She’s extremely vulnerable and I think she’s genuinely scared for her own life, which is the most important thing to her.

Villanelle is up to her usual tricks

"She’s really shocked by this situation she’s found herself in. And her physical impairment has really knocked her off her feet!"

As this week's episode takes flight, Eve is tasked by head of MI6 Carolyn Martens (the brilliant Fiona Shaw) with bringing Villanelle to justice. Meanwhile, Villanelle has got herself to a hospital and is hatching her own plan. Is she England-bound?

This opener is a great teaser for the whole series, and all episodes are available as a box set on BBC iPlayer.
