Holby City actress Phoebe Thomas has spoken about Maria's dilemma in the special Christmas edition of the medical drama. As nurse Maria Kendall, Phoebe is at the centre of the drama as Maria must choose between a life with sexy registrar Sam Strachan in America - and a life without him in Holby. Phoebe told whatsontv.co.uk: "Maria is so good at stepping out and analysing the situation and working out what's best for everyone and not just herself." In Maria's Christmas Carol, Maria meets the terrifying ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, and sees what the future could be like if she follows her heart - not her head. And, as Phoebe explained, those particular scenes are not for the faint-hearted. "It is quite scary," she said. "It might be a bit controversial, but I think that the fact that the whole theme is love, will get us through." Holby's Christmas episode can be seen at 8pm on Tuesday on BBC1.
