Larky horror comedy Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse shows a trio of nerdy boy scouts putting their much mocked skills to use during a zombie outbreak.

The knowingly tongue-in-cheek title is a tip off: horror comedy Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is going to deliver larky irreverence as well as gory splatter. Director Christopher Landon's movie mostly succeeds, although there are times when this tale of three teenage misfits (Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller and Joey Morgan) who put their disdained scouting skills to good use during a zombie plague does rather overdo the gross-out gags. Like its horny adolescent heroes, it also spends a little too much time ogling naked zombie flesh. But if you don’t mind the puerility you will find the laughs and scares coming thick and fast.

Jason Best

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
