Buried secrets.

A grief-stricken young Englishman encounters an enigmatic older woman in the south of France and disinters some long-buried family secrets in atmospheric mystery drama Waiting for You, the feature-directing debut of film production designer Charles Garrad.

Colin Morgan’s architecture school drop-out has been left angry and bitter by the death of his ex-army-man father, whose dying words hinted at the loss of something of great value, taken from him long ago by his former commanding officer. With only an old postcard and photo as clues, he heads to Provence, where the trail leads him to a rambling old house and its soignée and mysterious owner, played by French screen icon Fanny Ardant.

Garrad and his co-writer Hugh Stoddart take their time revealing the film’s secrets, but their slow-burn approach deepens the intrigue while Morgan brings a glowering intensity and Ardant an exotic glamour to their characters’ curious duet.

Certificate 12A. Runtime 92 mins. Director Charles Garrad

Waiting for You is showing on Sky Cinema Premiere from 28 August.

Jason Best

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
