Arthur & George star Martin Clunes is 'out of his comfort zone' doing period drama (VIDEO)

Doc Martin star Martin Clunes will plays Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in new ITV drama Arthur & George (ITV, Monday) and he spoke to us about his new role in an exclusive interview...

"I felt like I was moving out of my comfort zone a bit by doing a period drama," he explains. "My comfort zone has been Doc Martin or documentaries about animals so I was quite nervous doing this!"

Martin says he had a great time filming this three-part series – based on the novel by Julian Barnes about a true-life mystery Sir Arthur Conan Doyle became involved with in 1907 – but many of his fans are desperate to know if Doc Martin will continue after this year's series - which is rumoured to be the last!

"It's not up to us, it's up to ITV," explains Martin when asked if the hit show will be continuing next year. "We won't jump but we may get pushed! I'd love to keep doing it so long as we keep the show fresh but we'll have to see what happens."

Arthur & George begins on ITV on Monday, March 2 at 9pm. Watch the interview with Martin, above.
