TV Times tops picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight three of the best shows on telly tonight for Sunday 10th December

Attenborough & the Giant Elephant 9.00pm, BBC1

Sir David Attenborough’s familiar warmth and affection is on display in abundance as he follows the remarkable yet tragic life of the world’s first animal superstar – an African elephant named Jumbo. On the surface, all seemed well with Jumbo as millions flocked to see him between his arrival at London Zoo in 1865 and his untimely death in Canada, aged just 24, while touring with a circus in 1885. However, Jumbo’s night-time rages suggested otherwise. With the help of experts, Sir David examines Jumbo’s bones and pores over his keeper’s autobiography to tell a potent, heartbreaking tale you’ll think about for days. Rating: *****

Blue Planet 2, 8.00pm, BBC1

Blue Planet 2 Attenborough

After six weeks of exploring the wonders of our seas and oceans, the marine-life series concludes with a look at the worrying future our global waters face due to man-made threats. Sir David Attenborough speaks to scientists who reveal the tragic plight of albatross chicks ingesting potentially fatal plastic, dolphins being poisoned by toxins and the terrifying bleaching of coral reefs due to rising water temperatures. But hope is offered with inspiring conservation stories, including the team in the Caribbean who’ve turned around the fortunes of leatherback turtles by patrolling beaches to protect them from predators and poachers. A moving and thought-provoking finale. Rating: *****
