Peter Kay's sitcom has taken the iPlayer by storm
The second series of Peter Kay's Car Share has become a smash hit for BBC iPlayer, becoming its biggest comedy of the year so far and one of the most successful shows in the platform's history.
The series came to an end on BBC1 last week, in a cliffhanger episode in which Kayleigh (Sian Gibson) confessed her love for John (Peter Kay) before receiving a non-committal response.
Yet the series is still available on the iPlayer and figures show the entire run has been requested 10.6m times, making it the most popular comedy of the year by far.
New viewers are still joining the series as the first episode saw 300,000 new requests after the final episode aired on Tuesday.
Peter Kay said: “We’ve been blown away by the reception for our little show. All we wanted was to make something feel-good and happy so it’s really wonderful it connected with so many people.”
Last week Peter revealed he had no desire to make any more series of Car Share. But could its popularity change his mind?

Audiences have come at the show from all angles – watching on BBC1 and as a full series, and to have such enormous figures for BBC iPlayer alone shows how the public have taken these characters to their hearts.”
