Christopher Eccleston, Michael Gambon lead Sky Atlantic's star-studded Arctic mystery

Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) and Sir Michael Gambon (Harry Potter) will lead a star-studded cast into the Arctic Circle for Sky Atlantic's new show Fortitude.

US actor and Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci, Sofie Grabol (The Killing), Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife), Johnny Harris (This Is England) and Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones) will also be appearing in the 12-part drama, which centres on a mysterious death in the snow-swept town of Fortitide.

According to Sky: "Fortitude is a place like nowhere else. Although surrounded by the savage beauty of the Arctic landscape, it is one of the safest towns on earth.

"There has never been a violent crime here. Until now. In such a close-knit community a murder touches everyone and the unsettling, mysterious horror of this crime threatens the future of the town itself."

Julia Barry, Sky Atlantic HD director, said: "Our audience loves great, world-class story-telling and so Fortitude is a perfect fit for Sky Atlantic. We're thrilled to welcome Stanley - in his first British television role - and the rest of this amazing group of actors to the channel."

Filming in Iceland and the UK, Fortitude will screen in late 2014.
