It's a big moment many for its legion of fans around the world... The second series launch date for Netflix drama will be Friday, December 8.

Earlier this year the first series won two Golden Globes and two SAG awards. So the question is – will the second season live up to everyone's hopes and expectations?

In case you missed the first series, The Crown is a Netflix original that tells the inside story of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. It is based on the award-winning play The Audience and follows the events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.

It is written by Peter Morgan and produced by Andy Harries, who worked together on the Oscar-winning Helen Mirren film The Queen.

The Crown Series Two: What we know so far

The second season of The Crown continues in a chronological fashion. It begins with soldiers in Her Majesty's Armed Forces fighting an illegal war in Egypt during the controversial Suez Canal crisis.

The series will end with the downfall of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, but will track several other scandalous events.

It is thought that Prince Philip will have a central role in the plot. The Crown's creator said during an event with the Royal Television Society that the second season's 'soul is about Prince Philip's complexity'.

Prince Philip's past will be explored as well as his relationship with his son Charles.

Claire Foy will once again take on the role of the Queen and Matt Smith will continue to play Prince Philip.

The Telegraph reports that the romance between Princess Margaret, played by Vanessa Kirby, and Lord Snowdon, played by Downton's Matthew Goode, will also be documented. This is sure to include a good chunk of the Lord's scandalous behaviour.

His affairs before and after his marriage to the princess will be covered, one of which resulted in an illegitimate child.

Speaking about the second season, Morgan told The Telegraph: "These are vital, fascinating years - a period where Britain rejected a certain type of paternalistic leadership. The changes during these years will make for some uncomfortable adjustments in the years to come for the Royal family."
