The rumours AREN’T true…

Gogglebox have shattered the dreams of fans of the show after they finally revealed how they recruit their stars.

Channel 4 bosses were forced to respond to recent rumours that applications to appear on the show are now open to the public – but their answer wasn’t what viewers were expecting.

Instead, fans were left disappointed after the show revealed how they actually find participants who are willing to let cameras into their home.

Dismissing the rumours of open casting as ‘untrue’, Gogglebox tweeted on their official Twitter account: ‘We have never carried out an application process for the show and have predominantly only ever street cast. We hugely apologise for any inconvenience.’

Many fans vented their sadness at missing out on finding their own 15 minutes of fame.

One said: ‘Fuming thought I was about to get my big break.’

Another added: ‘Absolutely gutted. I have been trying the email address all day hoping it was just my internet not working 😯😢.’

While a third replied: ‘Damn, there goes my dream of being on #Gogglebox 😢.’

The show has always maintained that it has never publicly advertised for people to appear on the programme, with Gogglebox's creator Stephen Lambert insisting that everyone cast has always been ‘persuaded’ to appear on the show.

He said in 2015: ‘I think that's the key to why they are likeable and why the show works, because we get to know these people. We've never advertised for people on Gogglebox.’

The recent rumours, which Gogglebox branded ‘#fakenews’, also alleged that families, couples and friends who appear on the show get £1,500 a month as well as a takeaway of their choice to eat during filming.

Gogglebox airs on Fridays on Channel 4 at 9pm
