Idris Elba confirms Star Trek role in breakdancing video

There has been a lot of speculation about whether Idris Elba is in Star Trek Beyond, but now we finally have official confirmation that he’s on board – as well as video footage of the actor breakdancing on the bridge of the Enterprise.

The Luther star showed off his movies in a YouTube video announcing a new charity competition which offers fans the chance to win a walk-on role in the film itself, as a member of the Starship Enterprise’s crew.

In the video, the stars of the film announce details of the competition as they walk through the ship. They are finally joined by Idris, dressed down in a T-shirt and shorts.

And in a casual confirmation of the 42-year-old’s casting, Captain Kirk actor Chris Pine says: “Idris, glad you could join us.”

The cast, including Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto, then awkwardly dance under flashing disco lights, until Idris joins in.

The competition, called Star Trek: To Boldly Go, is a 'unique philanthropic initiative' in aid of nine charities. Fans can enter for US$10 (£6.40) and have until the deadline of September 1.

Star Trek Beyond is scheduled for release on July 8, 2016.
