Is she playing 'H'?! Warning contains spoilers! Anna's character will play a massive part in the final two parts of the current series of Line of Duty

Line of Duty will be getting a new face this Sunday as Motherland star Anna Maxwell Martin joins the BBC1 hit as DCS Patricia Carmichael.

With AC-12 no nearer catching "H", the mysterious master villain who’s apparently high up in the force, Carmichael is brought in from outside of the unit.

AC-12 has recently been in disarray, with boss Ted Hastings being placed under huge strain after the attack on his estranged wife.

So, presumably senior anti-corruption cop Carmichael is tasked with getting a grip on the situation.

Speaking about her role, Anna said: “I’ve been a fan of Line Of Duty for years, so was dead chuffed to be part of series five. I’m so pleased I no longer have to keep it a secret!

“I feel honoured to follow in the footsteps of the host of great actors who make up the Line Of Duty family, and Jed Mercurio - of course - has written a brilliant character in Carmichael. She’s a woman on a mission.”

Motherland Anna Maxwell Martin

Anna starred in the BBC comedy Motherland about a mum struggling desperately with parenthood

Of course, DCS Patricia Carmichael also now has to be added to the list of “H” suspects!

Creator Jed Mercurio, who’s revealed that under a dozen people currently know the identity of “H”, is thrilled Anna’s joined the cast.

“I’m delighted and flattered an actor of Anna Maxwell Martin’s status agreed to play this pivotal role in Line Of Duty. Anna was a pleasure to work with and brought real depth to the character of DCS Carmichael.”

Line of Duty series 5, Steve, Ted and Kate

Kate, Steve and Ted might get a kick up the backside from Carmichael!

So, is Carmichael a goodie? Will she give Steve and Kate are hard time (we think, yes!)? And will she wonder what on earth Hastings has been doing all these years?

Catch Anna Maxwell Martin making her Line of Duty debut this Sunday on BBC1 at 9pm.
