New Mr Darcy Matthew Rhys: 'Women swoon at my shirt!'

Matthew Rhys credits Colin Firth with the extraordinary response he's already having as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice sequel Death Comes to Pemberley.

Colin Firth famously portrayed Jane Austen's hero in the legendary 1995 BBC adaptation and 38-year-old Matthew tells TV Times magazine that he's very aware of Mr Darcy's popularity with female viewers.

"I've been wearing this billowing white shirt and whenever I walk past women they just swoon, without even seeing my face," laughs The Americans star. "It's because of Colin Firth – girls now see the shirt and think it represents romance!"

The three-part BBC1 series, adapted from the PD James novel and co-starring Anna Maxwell Martin and Jenna Coleman, will be seen at Christmas.
