Ripper Street’s third series will return to its roots when it screens on BBC One later this month.

Season three of the period detective drama, which stars Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg as investigators in the Whitechapel H Division, has already screened on Amazon Prime’s streaming service, but will return to terrestrial television this summer.

The show, which was also made by Amazon following its shock cancellation by the BBC in December 2013, will be shown at 9pm on Fridays on BBC One from July 31. Even the stars were surprised at its axeing.

The eight-part third series, which also stars MyAnna Buring, Charlene McKenna and Clive Russell, sees the trio – including Jerome’s character Bennet Drake returning to H Division as a newly promoted Detective Inspector – reunite after a train crash kills 55 civilians in Whitechapel.

Ripper Street, which premiered on BBC One in 2012, was saved by Amazon Prime Instant Video in early 2014 after the campaigning of fans.

The fourth series is currently being filmed, with a fifth season also already announced.

Meanwhile, series three and a series 1-3 box set will be available to buy on both DVD and Blu-ray from September 28.
