Filming has started on the fifth and final series of the BAFTA-nominated crime drama Ripper Street, which will be released on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
Set in late 19th-century Whitechapel, in the London’s East End, this closing chapter of the crime drama will show how the police officers of H Division attempt to maintain law and order on the streets of East London as the Victorian age comes to an end. Writer and creator Richard Warlow had previously stated his intention to see the series through to the end of Queen Victoria's reign in 1901. It orginally began in 1889, six months after the Jack the Ripper murders, and the last series was set in eight years later in 1897.
It will see the return of Joseph Mawles as the fearsome Detective Inspector Jedediah, who was last seen at the end of the second series when Detective Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) and Detective Sergeant Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn) schemed to take Shine’s life. Now he’s back, he’s determined to get his revenge…
The drama, which started out on BBC1, was picked up by Amazon following an outcry from viewers when it was cancelled after two series in the early part of 2014. Two series on, it’s continued to be a big hit with both Prime members and critics.
The most recent series saw David Threlfall (Shameless), Matthew Lewis (Happy Valley) and David Warner (Titanic) appear alongside series regulars as it reached its devastating, game-changing climax in the final episode which saw Reid and Drake go on the run.
