Stepping Out: Denise Welch dazzles in disco outfit

Denise Welch attracted some serious attention as she made her debut on ITV's newest dance show Stepping Out - for all the wrong reasons.

The former Corrie star turned Loose Women co-host was hoping to win plaudits for her disco skills with new husband Lincoln Townley - but instead it was her outfit, a garish jumpsuit adorned with photos of herself, which was the major talking point.

Host Davina McCall later revealed that the costume featured 113 pop-art style photos of Denise, as well as pictures of Lincoln.

However her dance routine, to the disco classic Shake Your Groove Thing, didn't go down quite as well with the 'front row' judging panel - which includes Jason Gardiner, Mel B and Wayne Sleep.

Jason described the performance as "disco-oh-no," adding: Disco is energetic and fun and its supposed to have a competitive edge.

"Denise you have an award winning smile, you started off so well, you lost a bit of energy half way through. Lincoln this is not what you do and I saw that but you supported Denise the whole way through.

Mel B, meanwhile, was kinder, telling the couple:" Denise you are so fun and likeable and loveable and on the stage you entertained us thoroughly and you were in time."

The show - billed as ITV's rival to Strictly Come Dancing - features six celebrities who, instead of dancing with professionals, are performing with their real-life partners.

JLS's Oritse Williams ultimately took top honours for the week, performing a dazzling tap routine with girlfriend AJ Azari which won them rave reviews from the judges.

Jason Gardiner commented that they had 'saved the best for last' while Wayne Sleep praised the couple for 'nailing' their performance.

Others taking part include Laurence Llewellyn Bowen, boxer Carl Froch, Westlife's Brian McFadden and Dempsey and Makepeace twosome Glynis Barber and Michael Brandon.

Next weekend's show will see the competitive edge introduced when one couple leaves the competition for good.

However the programme will also face competition from Strictly, which has its launch show next Saturday night.
