WARNING: Contains spoilers. Star Susan Ateh, who plays Bernie Kelly, talks about Redwater’s shock ending and the future of the series…

A quick search of #Redwater and it’s clear there’s a mixed reaction to last night’s Redwater: Kat and Alfie finale. Star Susan Ateh, who plays canny policewoman Bernie Kelly, reveals more…

Viewers held their breath as local garda Bernie Kelly pieced together Dermott’s involvement in the sudden death of Lance Byrne in Redwater.

Realising the net was closing in killer priest Dermott Dolan (Oisin Stack), panicked and persuaded his secret birth mother, Kat (Jessie Wallace) to board a boat and go out to sea with him. Tragedy struck, however, when Dermott crashed the boat, causing Kat to be gravely injured by the propeller!

Meanwhile, Kat’s husband Alfie (Shane Richie) underwent emergency brain surgery… The big question now is, will EastEnders’ much-loved couple die in Redwater?

“We really are left with a lot of storylines open at the end. We don’t know if Alfie is going to survive his operation. Meanwhile, Dermott has taken Kathleen out on a boat and she’s injured and bleeding. There are a lot of unanswered questions," said Susan Ateh, who plays savvy policewoman Bernie Kelly.

“Bernie has pieced a lot of the puzzle together. She’s now very aware that Dermott is not who we think he is and really needs to be brought in for questioning.”

“There are so many opportunities for a second series to occur,” added Susan, who is keen to return to the Redwater story, and also sympathised with fans who want answers. “Some people love cliffhangers and some people really dislike them. I’m sure a lot of people are annoyed. But also eager for a second series.

“I honestly loved working on this show. With a cast like this... it would be a privilege to work with everyone again.”
