The Oscars 2016 | Who Did Win

So Spotlight, the film about the dogged team of Boston Globe journalists who exposed sexual abuse by Catholic priests, upset the odds and claimed Best Film at last night's 88th Annual Academy Awards, but most of the other top awards followed the form book.

As expected, Leonardo DiCaprio took Best Actor for The Revenant, finally bagging an Oscar at the sixth time of asking; and Brie Larson scooped the Best Actress prize for her performance as a kidnapped mother in Room; Mark Rylance pipped sentimental favourite Sylvester Stallone to Best Supporting Actor and Alicia Vikander won Best Supporting Actress, while Alejandro G Iñárritu became only the third filmmaker in Hollywood history to win Best Director two years in a row.

The night's big winner was Mad Max: Fury Road, which roared away with six of the technical awards, including Best Costume for Jenny Beavan, which meant that The Martian and Star Wars: The Force Awakens both went home empty handed, as sadly did the sublime Carol, directed by Todd Haynes and adpated by Phyllis Nagy from Patricia Highsmith's novel.

Here's how the awards went, with the full list of nominees, followed by my 'will win predictions' and the actual winner.

Jason Best

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
