TV Times top picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Monday 5th February

Silent Witness, 9.00pm, BBC1

It’s a “less-than-merry” Christmas for the forensics team as they attend a crime scene at a posh house in the country, and you may find yourself shouting at the screen as Nikki (Emilia Fox) goes walkabout despite the fact that there is apparently a gunman still at large. She even goes down to the basement which, as horror fans know, is never a good idea. The clues come thick and fast as the team do a sweep – burned-out car, three dead bodies, firearms, drugs, fake passports and even a horse with a gunshot wound! As Jack (David Caves) observes: “This is not the Christmas I was expecting…” The case concludes tomorrow… Rating: ***

Next of Kin, 9.00pm, ITV

Next of Kin

The penultimate episode gallops into new territory as Guy confronts the truth that his shady client, Mr Khalid, is a major funder of terrorism. With Danny back and his cohorts planning a huge attack, Mona and the police are certain Danny’s working for UK counter-terrorism. That is until a reckless act by Omar endangers the entire sting operation… We can’t say any more for fear of breaking the official TV secrets act but be assured it’s got more stony tension than a road gritters’ convention! Rating: ****

The X-Files, 9.00pm, C5

When we last saw Mulder and Scully, all hell was breaking loose, Cigarette Smoking Man (who’s not dead after all and still reeling off those dark, splendidly verbose speeches) was chuckling about his role in a looming apocalypse – and a wide-eyed Scully was staring up at an otherworldly bright light. Two years on and the revived sci-fi drama is back for a new series – and it picks up right where it left off. But wait – is everything quite as it seems? Of course not – this is The X-Files! Scully’s unconscious, Mulder is on a crazed mission and Smoking Man is still chuckling. A daft but pacy opener that doesn’t let up and is packed with pleasing hints at insane plot developments to come. Rating: ****
