TV Times top picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Sunday 4th February

Endeavour, BBC1, 8.00pm

We’ve missed young DS Morse but now he’s back and even more prickly than ever! Along with pining for Thursday’s daughter Joan, he’s enduring an odd-couple-type flatshare with DS Strange, and is unimpressed about mentoring plucky newcomer DC Fancy, to whom he quickly makes clear that he hates small talk and the use of first names! To top it all, his latest case is one of his most testing to date. While it starts off gently with an attempted burglary involving a soon-to-be-auctioned Fabergé egg, matters take a darker turn after a gangster is viciously murdered, before two people involved in the auction are killed in an equally sinister fashion… Rating: *****

Call the Midwife, 8.00pm, BBC1

Call the Midwife Sunday 4th February

There’s a deeply upsetting case for Nurse Crane and Trixie to contend with as they help pregnant Doreen Lunt, whose home is filthy and whose daughter Wendy is going to school covered in bruises. But it soon becomes clear that there’s more to the family’s problems than meets the eye, and a shocking diagnosis changes all their lives forever. Meanwhile, Trixie faces a big dilemma as problems arise with Christopher’s daughter Alexandra and, as Shelagh frets about Magda not having friends, that soon proves to be the least of the au pair’s worries… Thankfully, there’s a wee bit of fun to be had as Valerie takes part in the local beauty contest organised by Fred and Vi. Rating: *****

McMafia, 9.00pm, BBC1

McMafia

Admittedly, we were losing patience with this convoluted series, but wow, tonight’s episode is a belter! Our two baddies Semiyon and Vadim arrange a meeting with Alex to try to put a stop to the spiral of violence. Surely it wouldn’t be as simple as signing a few contracts and all being friends again, though? Meanwhile, Rebecca can’t face talking to Alex, and Katya confronts her dad about his latest misdemeanour. Rating: *****
