TV Times tops picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight three of the best shows on telly tonight for Wednesday 6th December

Peaky Blinders, 9.00pm, BBC2

The gangster saga has been simmering in recent weeks, but this episode flies out of the traps with a tense and bullet-strewn opening act. After finding themselves a step behind the mafia so far, will the Peaky Blinders finally be able to strike back at their rivals from New York, or will they find themselves outwitted? Following the early action, Jewish crime boss Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy) arrives in town with a business proposition, but he’s not the only familiar face to return. Tommy’s old flame, the plum-voiced racehorse owner, May Carleton (Charlotte Riley) also renews her acquaintance with the Peaky Blinders kingpin. Rating: *****

Mary Berry’s Country House Secrets, 8.00pm, BBC1

Country House Secrets

This week, our national treasure arrives in wet and misty Devon to visit one of the oldest aristocratic houses in the country, Powderham (pronounced with a silent ‘h’) Castle near Exeter. Here, she meets Charlie Courtenay, the Earl of Devon, who lives in the house with his American wife and two children. The Earl takes Mary on a grand tour of the property, ending in the original Victorian kitchen, where she bakes plain and fruit scones for a traditional Devon cream tea – cream on first when in this county, unlike next-door neighbour Cornwall’s jam-first tendencies. The trip wraps up with a meal for the family and estate workers, with Charlie rustling up his signature cockle curry – a first for Mary! Rating: ***

Secret Life of the Zoo, 8.00pm, C4

It’s a big day for male onager Holmes. After two years of living alone he is being released into the female paddock. This donkey-like animal is the rarest horse species in the world and one of the rarest animals in the zoo, so although he may not know it, there’s a lot riding on Holmes impressing the ladies. Elsewhere, the keepers are worried about Galápagos tortoise Charlie who they suspect is being bullied by his older sister. Rating: ***
